Welcome to Pine Class, our vibrant and nurturing Reception learning environment at Axbridge Church of England Academy. Led by Mrs Bissett (SENCO, EYFS Lead) and supported by Mrs Bush (HLTA), Pine Class offers an exciting, play-rich start to school life where children feel valued, inspired, and ready to thrive.

In Pine Class, every day is filled with opportunities to explore, investigate, imagine and discover. Our curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and is designed around purposeful play, carefully modelled learning, and child-led exploration. Through our Axbridge Inquiry Curriculum, children are encouraged to be curious, confident and independent thinkers, beginning their learning journey through rich themes, stories, outdoor learning and hands-on experiences.

We place a strong emphasis on early communication, language and social development, ensuring children learn how to build relationships, share ideas, and express themselves with confidence. Early reading, phonics and early maths are taught in engaging and interactive ways, supported by high-quality resources and continuous provision that stretches children’s thinking.

Our classroom environment is warm, inclusive and carefully organised to promote self-selection, creativity and problem-solving. Children enjoy access to indoor and outdoor learning spaces throughout the day, enabling them to develop physically, creatively and emotionally within a safe and stimulating setting.

Above all, Pine Class is a caring and happy place where every child is known, celebrated and supported. Our school values of Community, Love and Courage are woven through everything we do; from collaborative play to resolving small conflicts, from showing kindness to trying new challenges with confidence.

Families are a key part of our learning community. We communicate regularly, celebrate successes together, and work in partnership to ensure each child flourishes during their important first year at school.
