Hazel

Welcome to Hazel Class, our dynamic and engaging Year 1 learning environment at Axbridge Church of England Academy. Taught by Mrs Hall and Mrs Farnie, and supported by Mr Newland, Hazel Class provides a warm, structured and purposeful transition from the Early Years into Key Stage One. Children continue to develop their confidence and independence while embracing new routines, challenges and expectations.
In Hazel Class, learning builds upon the strong foundations established in Reception and extends children’s understanding through our broad and ambitious Axbridge Inquiry Curriculum. Lessons are carefully sequenced and connected, enabling pupils to deepen knowledge through hands-on experiences, discussion, practical investigation and creative application. Reading, writing and mathematics are taught systematically and reinforced through meaningful activities that encourage children to apply their skills with increasing accuracy and independence.
Our approach emphasises communication, oracy and active participation. Children in Hazel Class are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas and think critically about the world around them. Through high-quality texts, engaging topics and purposeful play-based elements, children develop a love of learning while strengthening core skills across the curriculum. The classroom environment is calm, organised and stimulating, with clear learning areas and resources that promote independence and curiosity.
Throughout the year, our school values of Community, Love and Courage underpin everything we do. Children learn to work collaboratively, show kindness, persevere when tasks feel challenging, and take pride in their achievements. Staff work closely with families, ensuring open communication and shared understanding of each child’s progress, wellbeing and next steps.
Hazel Class is a place where children grow in confidence, build strong learning habits, and begin to see themselves as historians, scientists, writers and mathematicians. It is an exciting year full of discovery, creativity and flourishing.
