Oak

Welcome to Oak Class, our inspiring Year 4 learning environment at Axbridge Church of England Academy. Taught by Miss Nash and supported by Miss Hart (HLTA), Oak Class marks the final year of our school; a significant and exciting stage where pupils develop maturity, independence and confidence as they prepare for their transition to middle school. On Fridays, Oak Class is additionally taught by Mr Shillabeer, and Mr Sage delivers specialist French teaching each week.
Year 4 is a pivotal year filled with opportunity, responsibility and personal growth. Pupils in Oak Class take on leadership roles across the school, act as role models for younger children, and contribute actively to the wider school community. They participate in whole-school events, lead worship, support charitable initiatives and develop teamwork, resilience and communication through a range of enrichment activities.
Our Axbridge Inquiry Curriculum remains at the heart of classroom learning, enabling pupils to deepen their understanding through sophisticated enquiry, critical thinking and cross-curricular connections. Lessons are designed to challenge pupils academically while fostering curiosity, creativity and the ability to discuss, debate and reflect on complex ideas. Guided and independent learning is balanced carefully, ensuring children have the confidence to work autonomously while receiving structured support where needed.
Reading and writing expectations grow significantly in Year 4. Pupils study high-quality texts that broaden vocabulary and deepen comprehension skills. Their writing becomes more refined, with emphasis on accuracy, structure, style and purpose. In mathematics, children consolidate core number skills while advancing reasoning, problem-solving and the application of mathematical concepts in different contexts.
The learning environment in Oak Class is purposeful, well-organised and aspirational. Routines are clear, expectations are high, and pupils are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their progress. Oracy and collaborative learning are integral, enabling pupils to articulate ideas clearly, justify reasoning, and engage meaningfully with others’ viewpoints.
This year also brings significant enrichment and memorable experiences. Oak Class pupils take part in performances, sporting events, music opportunities, outdoor learning and residential visits that build confidence, teamwork and independence. These experiences support pupils’ wider development and prepare them for the next stage of their educational journey.
Throughout Oak Class, our school values of Community, Love and Courage underpin daily life. Pupils show kindness, empathy and respect; they persevere through challenge; and they take pride in being positive role models within our school community. Regular communication with families ensures that every child is supported academically, socially and emotionally throughout this important final year.
Oak Class is a year of challenge, leadership and celebration. It is a time when pupils flourish as confident, capable and responsible young learner; fully prepared for the exciting opportunities and expectations of middle school.
